Old Real Banknotes Are Going Out of Circulation; See What To Do With Them

The first real banknotes issued in the country will be withdrawn from circulation. This information was confirmed by the Central Bank of Brazil (BC), with a rule referring to the so-called “First Family of the Real”. The BC also advises banks to collect old banknotes so that they can be exchanged for new ones. Currently, 7.4 billion banknotes are in circulation in Brazil.

The Central Bank’s standard expresses and justifies that “given the productive life of these banknotes, their physical condition is assumed to be unsuitable for circulation”. Therefore, banknotes belonging to the first royal family are withdrawn from circulation due to natural wear and tear over time. The BC also highlights that the wear of banknotes can affect the identification of security elements by the population, as is the case when observing the watermark, which appears when the banknote is held up to the light.

According to the institution, these banknotes represent 3% of the total banknotes in circulation, which were launched in 1994, when they replaced the Royal Ship.

What should I do with old banknotes?

For Brazilians who have notes from the “First Family of Real” in their wallets, don’t worry, the money will not be lost. The validity continues and the old notes can be used normally for purchases and daily payments without restrictions. But does it need to be changed? No! There is no need to run to the banks to exchange them immediately.

Who should collect old ballots?

The banks themselves are responsible for collecting old banknotes. According to the normative instruction No. 488 of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, financial institutions, upon receipt of these notes, must send them to the Central Bank. This, in turn, will replace the old banknotes with new ones.
