Shelley Duvall, American actress who starred in The Shining, dies at 75

Shelley Duvall, the American actress who starred in films such as “The Shining” and “Popeye,” has died at the age of 75. She had been struggling with mental health issues.

She died in her sleep from complications from diabetes at her home in Blanco, Texas. This information was published by Dan Gilroy, with whom she had been in a relationship since 1989.

“My dear and wonderful friend and life partner has left us. She has been through so much lately, and now she is free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley,” Gilroy said.

Her first break in film was given to her by director Robert Duvall, who discovered her while she was studying in Houston, Texas. In 1970, she starred in his film Voar é com os Pássaros.

She and the director, who was nominated for an Oscar seven times throughout his career, worked together on five more films in the 1970s, including “Nashville” (1975).

She won the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival for her film Three Women (1977). That same year, she was one of the supporting cast in Woody Allen’s Nervous Bride, a classic comedy that won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

The following decade, she starred as an actress and singer in Popeye, a film based on the cartoon. In a new partnership with Duvall, she played Olivia Paletto alongside Robin Williams (1951–2014) in the title role.

The most talked-about role of his career came in the horror classic “The Shining” (1980). In the film, directed by Stanley Kubrick and based on a book by Stephen King, she plays Wendy Torrance, the wife of writer Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson).

Duvall also had a career as a producer. At Think Entertainment, he created children’s programs that received two Emmy nominations, the highest award in American television. Among the television attractions was the film “Contos de Fada”, which was shown in Brazil on TV Cultura.
