JK Rowling has been reported to British police for transphobia. The complaint was filed by India Willoughby, a former contestant on the UK’s Celebrity Big Brother show. Information from Deadline.

The two have already traded accusations on social media, and India said she filed a complaint against the writer with Northumbria Police days ago.

In a television interview, according to Deadline, India stated that she had a complaint against JK, arguing that the writer had repeatedly called her the wrong gender.

India underwent gender reassignment surgery in 2015 and is said to be the UK’s first transgender TV reporter, working for ITV’s Tyne Tees regional newspaper.

In recent days, JK has said on social media that India has “never become a woman.” The Harry Potter author wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “India represents a misogynistic male fantasy of what a woman is.”

She even refused to use pronouns referring to India and publicly mocked the station the journalist worked for.

“The mask has fallen. Historically, people have given her the benefit of the doubt when they hear that all she does is advocate for women’s rights,” India said. “She can’t discuss that anymore now that she’s come out and told me so broadly that India Willoughby is a man.”

The UK Attorney General’s Office says hostility based on transgender identity can be prosecuted as a hate crime. Deadline has contacted Northumbria Police for comment.

In publications, the author continued to use male pronouns.

“I ignored this advice because I don’t mind giving India the publicity it clearly wants,” JK wrote.

“Since I know that lying to authorities is a crime, I simply have to explain to the police that India, in my opinion, is a classic example of a narcissistic male who lives in a state of permanent, unbearable anger. A woman cannot be forced to accept her according to her own worth.”

The author also referred to a 2021 Employment Court ruling, which concluded that researcher Maya Forstater’s gender-critical views were a philosophical belief protected under equality law. “There is no law that forces anyone to pretend to believe that India is a woman,” JK said.

Recently, the writer was involved in the process of finding a screenwriter for a live-action Harry Potter series for Max, and the proposal was narrowed down to three finalists: Francesca Gardiner, Tom Moran, and Kathleen Jordan. The series is scheduled to premiere in 2026.
