An earthquake with an approximate magnitude of 5.9 struck Ishikawa Prefecture, on the Noto Peninsula, in Japan. The epicenter was about 10 kilometers deep and occurred at 6:31 a.m. local time. According to the country’s meteorological agency, no tsunami warnings have been issued.
The seismic event struck the same area where A Big earthquake It led to the evacuation of nearly 100,000 people and killed more than 230 by January 1.
Although the epicenter was located about 230 kilometers from Tokyo, where residents did not feel the earthquake, residents said they woke up to alerts about the earthquake on their phones.
Specialized sites indicate that a large number of people felt the tremor, but given the country’s tradition of this type of event, with strengthened infrastructure, the tremor is unlikely to cause significant damage. At least five other small earthquakes were recorded in the same area after the more intense seismic event.
