A statement purportedly issued by the Icelandic government has upset many women in the country, who have reported receiving a series of invitations on social media to meet men from around the world in recent weeks.

The announcement, which was widely disseminated on various websites and social media starting in June, stated that the government was implementing a program to stimulate population growth in the country. This program is supposed to provide payments of up to R$15,000 per month to immigrants interested in marrying an Icelandic citizen.

The justification given was that there were fewer men than women in the country. However, this news was quickly refuted. According to an article published in early July by Icelandic news site Gravine, the government would have no reason to launch projects aimed at population growth at this time.

According to government data mentioned in the report, there are more men than women in Iceland. The ratio is 1,007 men for every 1,000 women in the country’s general demographics, with some exceptions, such as in the capital, Reykjavik, where there are 985 men for every 1,000 women.
