On Wednesday, May 22, the governments of Spain, Ireland and Norway announced that they will recognize the State of Palestine as a sovereign member of the international community as of May 28. Although the decision sparked widespread controversy from Europe to the Middle East and prompted Israel to recall its ambassadors for consultations, many countries, including Brazil, already recognize the Palestinian state. Information is from Reuters.

Following this announcement, these three European countries join 142 other countries, all members of the United Nations, that officially recognize Palestine as an independent state, according to information from the Palestinian National Authority.

But before this statement, only Sweden and Iceland in Western Europe were on the list that recognized Palestinian sovereignty.

On the other hand, countries such as the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada, as well as members of the G7 that make up the group of richest countries in the world, have not yet officially recognized the state. Palestine.

Despite its advocacy of a two-state solution in the region, the North American government, for example, adheres to the position that the issue must be resolved through direct negotiations between the parties involved, without external interference.

Since 2012, Palestine has enjoyed the status of a “permanent observer state” in the United Nations, which gives it the right to participate in the deliberations of the organization, although it cannot exercise the right to vote.
