Sony published a video clip explaining the features of its new robot dedicated to microsurgery, which demonstrates the accuracy of the device’s work when sewing a corn kernel. It is the first robot of its kind that can independently switch between its tools, and it has succeeded in animal surgery.

In microsurgery, surgeons need to work with very small areas, nerves and veins – often smaller than a millimeter – and perform procedures through a microscope. Sony’s robot operates remotely, with the surgeon moving what appear to be pens on equipment not connected to the robotic arms performing the surgery.

The robot also solves the need for surgeons in this area to be highly skilled in hand movements, especially in fine motor and finger coordination. Moreover, it can switch between instruments in less than 10 seconds with a simple command, reducing surgery interruption time.

This device facilitates surgeons’ movements and, at the same time, allows larger movements, such as pulling wires, without the surgeon having to change the force of the movement, according to Sony, allowing for very precise procedures.

To see what is happening in surgery, the robot allows the surgeon to watch in real time through a 3D camera, with 4K quality, which transmits the image to a virtual reality headset attached to the surgeon’s table. Watch the video below of how the Sony robot works:
