The Government of Amapa has received approval to join the UNESCO Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development programme, announced for the period from 2021 to 2030. People's Observatory of the Sea (OMARA) project The Institute of Scientific and Technological Research of Amapa State (Iba) was selected to participate in the activities.

International achievement is the result of collaborative work involving researchers, scientists and the community. The Amara project is funded by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development and implemented by the Government of Amapa. According to the initiative's coordinator, Valdinera Santos, the approval represents an opportunity to highlight the work done by researchers from Amapa on the Amazon coast.

“We have a series of challenges that we have to face through this integration. One of these challenges is to have stronger coastal communities, with information about coastal and ocean risks, in addition to other challenges that we face in this decade of ocean science,” Valdinera highlights. .

With approval, the People's Sea Observatory becomes part of a global network of actions. This recognition reinforces the state government's commitment to advancing scientific research, promoting citizen science, and preserving the oceans for future generations.

“UNESCO recognizes projects that contribute significantly to the challenges of the Ocean Decade, and for IEPA this is very important, because the coordination of this observatory takes place at the Center for Aquatic Research, which is a recognition of the institution and of the participation of the communities that have participated in this process aimed at protecting our marine resources.” .
