Tesla, led by billionaire Elon Musk, announced the recall of 2 million vehicles in the U.S. in response to NHTSA investigations into accidents involving the Autopilot system. The call comes after two years of intensive analysis by the North American Road Safety Regulatory Agency.
About a year ago, NHTSA released alarming data that Tesla vehicles were involved in 70% of traffic accidents in the United States. The analysis covered 11 vehicle manufacturers and considered the period from June 2021 to May 2022, showing the need for improvements in Level 2 driving systems.
An update will be far away
Tesla will perform a remote update on approximately 2 million affected vehicles to address the identified issues. This innovative approach allows for online fixes to prevent improper use of Autopilot and ensure safety, without the need for owners to visit Tesla dealerships or workshops.
NHTSA’s main concern, said Ann Carlson, the agency’s acting administrator, is drivers’ reliance on Tesla’s Autopilot technology.
This isn’t the first system-related recall, as the automaker recalled nearly 54,000 vehicles in early 2022 due to a fault that affected the ability to stop at intersections.
