The wife of former President Jimmy Carter, who ruled the country from 1977 to 1981, was undergoing chemotherapy.
Former US first lady Rosalyn Carter died this Sunday (19.Nov.2023) at the age of 96. The information was released by The Carter Center, which she and her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, founded.
“Former First Lady Rosalyn Carter, a passionate advocate for mental health, care and women’s rights, passed away on Sunday, November 19 at 2:10 p.m. [horário local] At his home in Plains, Georgia, at the age of 96. On Friday (November 17), the family announced that Rosalyn had begun receiving palliative care, as had the 99-year-old former president. In May, the Carter family publicly announced that Rosalyn was diagnosed with dementia.
Both have been married for 77 years. They married 15 years before the politician became governor of Georgia in 1946. She and Jimmy were the longest-married presidential couple. The former Democratic president ruled the United States from 1977 to 1981.
The couple founded The Carter Center after Jimmy left the presidency. The foundation’s mission is to mediate international crises and promote democracy and human rights.
