The United Kingdom wants to reduce the risks involved in AI use

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak supported a global strategy to ensure legal use of the instrument

The United Kingdom has announced today (26) that it will create the world’s first artificial intelligence (AI) defense agency. The agency is responsible for researching, evaluating, and testing new types of AI to identify and mitigate risks such as bias, disinformation, crime, and the use of AI to create weapons.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak (pictured) made the announcement a week ahead of the first global summit on the risks of AI to be held in the UK between November 1 and 2.

Sunak said the institute is essential to ensure AI is used safely and responsibly. “AI has the potential to revolutionize our lives, but it also presents significant risks,” he said. “We must be prepared for these risks and take steps to mitigate them.”

The institute will be funded by the British government and will be based in London under the leadership of a panel of independent experts.

EU moves ahead on AI rules

The UK’s announcement comes at a time when governments around the world are working to develop policies and regulations for AI. For example, the European Union is developing AI legislation that requires AI systems to be safe and impartial.

Now, through meetings between parliament and EU member states, the standards must be agreed upon in a process known as vetting to finalize the final versions of the laws.
