“As the steward of the nation’s public lands and the agency responsible for protecting and managing fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats, we are uniquely positioned to do what’s best for our planet,” Holland said in a statement.

Until then, the department has made progress in installing refilling stations for reusable water bottles, measures to promote recycling and finding more sustainable alternatives to bags and other material products.

In addition, agencies and offices will collect data on plastic use, analyze alternatives, and identify priority products to address first. They will also identify potential funding needs, including the Bureau of Indian Affairs, National Parks Service, Fish and Wildlife Service and others.
