A decree published by the Ministry of Justice on Tuesday (5) established the rules for granting temporary visas or residence visas to residents of the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP). The initial visas will be for two years.

Nine countries are part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP). In addition to Brazil, the group includes Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissal, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe, and East Timor.

In the case of Brazil, the government has decided that it will grant temporary visas for up to two years for the following purposes:

• teachers;
• business men;
• researchers;
• cultural agents, such as artists and athletes;
• students exchange;
• Highly qualified technicians.

This type of document must be requested from the Embassies or Consulates General of Brazil in the country of origin of the interested parties.

A residence permit may be granted to foreigners already in Brazil, regardless of their immigration status. The visa must be requested at the Federal Police unit.

An immigrant who wants to obtain a residence visa in Brazil cannot have a criminal record in the country and will have to prove means of subsistence.
