James Cameron, director of the movie “Titanic”, compared the tragedy of 1912 to The destruction of the submarine Titan, confirmed by the United States Coast Guard This Thursday (22). “I was struck by the similarity,” said the director, referring to the two instances in which ship captains had been sternly warned of the dangers of travel.
In an interview with ABC, Cameron stressed all the difficulties of descending more than 3,000 meters below the surface for a small submarine to get to the place where the wreck of the Titanic is located. The famous ship, which left the UK for America in April 1912, sank after hitting an iceberg.
Because of the 1997 movie, Cameron has gone down to the wreckage area 33 times. “I’ve been there many times… I know the wreck site very well… I understand the engineering issues associated with building this type of vehicle and all the safety protocols…”
He continued, recalling the situation so well shown in the film: “I was struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, in which the captain was repeatedly warned of the ice in front of his ship and yet sailed at full speed into a field of ice on a moonless night. Many people died as a result of it.”
In recent days, a report has surfaced about the submarine’s potential safety flaws. Former director of marine operations for OceanGate Expeditions, a submarine manufacturer, David Lochridge, was fired because he questioned the safety of the Titan, cited in a court filing for the ship’s “experimental and unproven design.”
According to Lochridge, part of the nose of the device is designed to withstand pressure at a depth of 1,300 metres, not 4,000 metres.
