A Azul Airlines tried to make a way to London Heathrow Airportstarting in the fourth quarter, but the request for slots was rejected by Airport Coordination Limited (ACL), which regulates demand for flights in the United Kingdom.
The ACL report covers the weeks between the end of October and the end of March 2024, the winter season in the Northern Hemisphere.
Currently, the Brazilian airline flies to Lisbon, Portugal Launched a daily flight to Paris (Orly) at the end of April. Both aircraft are operated from the company’s main hub in Brazil, Viracobos.
Interest in flying to one of Europe’s busiest airports reinforces the airline’s push to expand its international operations, currently very restricted.
However, Azul faces potential changes in the long-range fleet. The airline had previously planned to acquire two Airbus A350-900 aircraft. Sent to Iberia.
There have been rumors for weeks that the two acquired jets would be withdrawn from service due to high operating costs. Azul declined to comment on possible changes.
LATAM will have a Lima-London flight
Currently, the route between the United Kingdom and Brazil is served by British Airways (which flies to São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro) and LATAM Airlines (Heathrow-Guarulhos).
However, as of April 2024, Virgin Atlantic operates a daily flight between London and Sao Paulo.
Denial of slots is not uncommon at Heathrow, where demand is more than it can handle.
Apart from Azul, slot requests from several other carriers such as IDA Airways, Emirates, DAP, Turkish Airlines and Virgin were not approved.
