The Saudi government has threatened to review relations with the United States if Washington takes action against the country

The Washington Post published the information, based on classified documents

Biden and Mohammed bin Salman

Sputnik – Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman threatened the United States with “serious economic consequences” if the United States punished Riyadh last year for its decision to cut oil production, according to a Washington Post report based on classified documents.

And the newspaper notes that US President Joe Biden warned, last October, that Saudi Arabia would suffer from certain “consequences” of pressuring OPEC + to reduce oil production, amid rising energy prices and on the eve of the midterm elections in the United States.

While Riyadh publicly defended its actions through diplomatic statements, the crown prince privately threatened to radically change US-Saudi relations and cause great economic damage to the United States if it actually took such steps.

The US intelligence document regarding alleged threats to the prince emerged as a result of the massive leak of classified material on the Discord platform.

A source in the US National Security Council claimed to the newspaper that he had no knowledge of such threats from Saudi Arabia.

Follow up on recommendations

“In general, these documents reflect a glimpse of reality and cannot give a complete picture,” the source said.

Recently, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia re-established its diplomatic relations with Iran, and gave the green light for Syria’s return to the Arab League. In this regard, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said that Washington should respect the will of the peoples of the Middle East, and stop undermining the process of dialogue and reconciliation between the countries of the region. Meanwhile, the United States announced that it had no plans to normalize relations with the Syrian government.
