The Pentagon is looking for ways to replace active-duty personnel with reservists, according to the US Secretary of Defense
Sputnik Brazil – The Pentagon said today (02) that the Biden administration will temporarily send 1,500 additional troops to help protect the border between the United States and Mexico. This action comes because soon, when the COVID-19 border restrictions are lifted later, there may be an increase in illegal immigration this month.
Reuters quoted Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Pat Ryder as saying that the deployment of active forces for a period of 90 days will complement the work of the US Border Patrol, but will not perform law enforcement functions.
Ryder said the forces will provide ground surveillance, data entry and warehouse support to free up border agents and “fill critical capability gaps.”
The force will add to the ongoing deployment of about 2,500 National Guard troops, according to media reports.

Also according to the British agency, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, when asked about sending troops, said in a press conference that the United States is a sovereign country and that Mexico respects its decisions.
Joe Biden, a Democrat running for re-election in 2024, has faced a record number of immigrants caught crossing the border illegally since taking office in 2021, and has come under fire from Republicans for reversing former President Donald Trump’s hardline policies.
