The principal of a school in Tallahassee, Florida, was fired because parents of sixth-graders were upset after their children saw pictures of Michelangelo’s David sculpture.

According to the “Tallahassee Democrat” newspaper, one of the students’ parents described the sculpture as obscene.

The former principal, Hope Carrasquilla, said there was an ethical issue: Parents should have been notified before the artwork was shown to students.

But the parents, who did not receive the letter, are upset after the children saw the sculpture.

The David sculpture is one of Renaissance artist Michelangelo’s most famous works. The piece depicts the biblical hero David with anatomical realism, and is considered one of the most important works of the Renaissance.

Begun in 1501 and completed in 1504, the sculpture is the largest human representation, standing over 5 meters tall and weighing 5 tons of solid marble. The job is based in Florence, Italy, the city that originally commissioned the job.

David, the biblical hero who defeated Goliath with a stone, shot with a slingshot of sorts.

Michelangelo’s statue shows David holding this “slingshot” before his confrontation with Goliath. It is one of the most important works in the entire history of art.
