The European Union has reached the limits of its ability to impose sanctions on Russia

Sputnik – According to a source linked to the bloc, there is no room for new sanctions to be imposed this year at the same pace that were imposed in 2022.

A source in the European Union said, on Wednesday (11), that the European Union does not believe that it will be able to impose new sanctions on Moscow this year at the same speed as it did in 2022.

“It is becoming more and more difficult to impose new sanctions on Russia, of course there is not much room for that. Most of the tools have already been used. It can be said with confidence that the scale and speed with which the EU sanctions packages are prepared and approved against Russia are in place,” the source said. 2022 will not be the same as this year.

According to the source, the European Union is not discussing a new package of sanctions against Russia. The source did not rule out that the diamond and nuclear industries would be subject to sanctions sooner or later.

As the European Commissioner for the Environment, Virginius Senkivius, noted in December, the European Union has reached the threshold of sanctions against Russia. In the future, it will only be possible to detail the restrictions.

After the start of the Russian special operation in Ukraine, the West intensified its sanctions pressure on Moscow. The EU has already drawn up nine sanctions packages, the latest of which was approved on December 16.

All this primarily led to a rise in prices for electricity, fuel and food in the European countries themselves. As Russian President Vladimir Putin has emphasized, the policy of containing and weakening Russia is a long-term strategy for the West, but the sanctions have dealt a heavy blow to the entire global economy.

According to Putin, the main goal of the United States and its allies is to make the lives of millions of people worse. However, according to the head of state, the strategy failed to undermine Russia’s financial stability and Europe itself came to a standstill.
