LONDON, 5 May 2021 (AFP) – A new capacity-based immigration policy introduced after Brexit will allow the British government to issue work visas to award-winning scientists, artists or musicians starting this Wednesday.
Winners of the Nobel, the Touring Prize for computer scientists, the Grammy, the Oscars or the Golden Globe for this reform introduced by the Ministry of the Interior can live and work in the UK much more easily.
The new policy will include individuals recognized with certain awards in the fields of dance, fashion, architecture and the social sciences. Work visa procedures will be simplified and expedited.
It is integrated into the new “point-based” immigration system introduced by the Boris Johnson government after Brexit, which “aims to attract the best (talents) to the country based on the skills they can bring, rather than their nationality,” he said, the Home Ministry said in a statement.
“The winners of these awards have reached the pinnacle of their careers and the UK has a lot to offer,” said Home Minister Priti Patel. “These big changes will give them the freedom to come and work in our arts, sciences, music and film industries.”
Immigration control, especially from the poorest countries in the EU, was one of the central themes of the 2016 Brexit referendum campaign.
From January 1, workers from the EU will no longer enjoy full freedom of movement in the UK and will be treated as non-EU citizens.
The New Points system rewards deserving and less skilled workers for harming people. To get a visa, training, English language knowledge and financial income are taken into account.
