Nutritious, responsible for strengthening the immune system, rich in fiber and a source of minerals. This is the mango, a fruit that can be easily found in markets, grocery stores, and also on the streets at this time of the year.

Estácio nutritionist and professor of nutrition course Lidiani Figueiredo Santana explains that despite the varieties, all mangoes contain fiber, antioxidants, vitamins such as A and C and are a source of minerals such as calcium, zinc, potassium, iron and magnesium.

Because it contains vitamins C and A, mangoes help strengthen our immune system, which helps prevent disease. Vitamin A contributes to the integrity of the skin and mucous membranes, and prevents the invasion of pathogens that can cause health problems. Its deficiency reduces resistance to infections, for example. On the other hand, Vitamin C prevents damage to body cells and increases immunity. It is worth noting that we do not produce vitamin A or C, but we need them for our body’s defense.

Lediani also explains that the fruit contains antioxidants and soluble fiber that contribute to the smooth functioning of the arteries, the balance of heart rate and levels of LDL, otherwise known as bad cholesterol — which, if in excess, can block veins and arteries, increasing the risk of infarction. Mango also helps in the proper functioning of the brain. Because it contains glutamic acid (glutamine), an important amino acid for the body, the fruit can help focus and improve memory.

More than 1,600 species of mangoes have been cataloged worldwide. In Brazil, it is possible to find about 10 types of the fruit. The most common are Sword, Palmer, Tommy Atkins and Rose.

“Mango is a fruit with a very amazing flavor and aroma, in addition to being a great source of vitamins, carotenoids, and carbohydrates. Therefore, it is a very functional fruit. Having a great diversity of species, with different flavors and colors, mangoes favor combinations for sweet and savory, cold and hot preparations,” she says.
