Is PIS/Pasep the same as salary allowance?
The Program for Social Inclusion (PIS) and the Civil Servants Asset Formation Program (Pasep) are employer contributions to the government, intended to fund unemployment insurance and salary bonuses.
Between 1971 and 1988, workers contributed to the Fundo de Participação PIS/Pasep, and the amount collected was “returned” to the workers in quotas, which were only paid to people with a formal contract between 1971 and October 1988.
Today, however, the PIS/Pasep money is for the Workers’ Support Fund (FAT), which pays for social programmes, including allowances.
