Plus-size models say they were banned from a club due to obesity phobia

Models and influencers Alexa Jay and Ella Halikas have been banned from entering The Highlight Room club in Los Angeles, USA. NBC News reported that they claimed one of the security guards deemed them “too big.”

In a video that went viral on social media, Jay, 24, alleged that he previously suffered discrimination in clubs, bars and parties for being black and plus size. So, even before I got to The Highlight Room, I was already worried.

However, tonight she decided to put those worries aside to go to her friend’s birthday party.

She was in a crowded corridor outside the club’s entrance with several friends, including model and influencer Ella Halikas, 25. After a few friends manage to enter the club, Jay and Halikas are stopped by security.

“He looked at me up and down and said, ‘Not tonight.’ It was then that I knew exactly what was going on but I asked, ‘Is it happening?’

The two models said they thought they were rejected for being plus size. They point out that what happened is just one example of how people with large bodies are discriminated against.

On TikTok, they held out for the situation and started the hashtag #NotTonight to encourage others to share their experiences with size discrimination.

“We are tired of letting this happen and not talking about it,” Hallikas said. “It was so inhumane. It was like we were under scrutiny. If you’ve ever experienced any kind of discrimination like this, you know exactly how awful and disgusting it is, and we won’t let that go any further,” Jay added.

A spokesperson for Tao Group Hospitality, the parent company of The Highlight Room, said in a statement that it was “aware of Ella and Alexa’s experience and actively engaged with them to discuss the incident.”

“We always value feedback on our operations and continue to work to improve our guest experience. Our company does not tolerate any kind of discrimination,” the company spokesperson said.

Jay and Halikas confirmed that they had contacted the club, but said they had not received an apology.
