Jimmy White was defeated by Ryan Day on his return to the UK Championship

Jimmy White’s run at the UK Championships in York ended with a 6-2 first round loss to Ryan Day.

White, 60, made his first final in more than a decade by beating former winner Stephen Maguire and world number 57 Dominic Dale in qualifying to reach the round of 16.

After missing the opening two frames for the world number 16, White faced a tough task but responded by taking the third frame with a 55 break.

Day regained his two-frame lead with 127 and another century break (105) in the sixth frame to give him a 5-1 lead.

White took the seventh frame to the delight of the Barbican crowd, but Day wrapped up his victory with a 63-minute break in the eighth.

Day will face Sam Craigie in the second round after the Newcastle 28-year-old beat defending champion Zhao Jindong 6-2 on Saturday.

The 25-year-old Zhao, who beat Luca Brezel in last year’s final, led 2-1 but was made to pay for a number of key mistakes by world number 47 Craigie, who opened the match with an 83-point gap.

Craigie scored 78 and 69 to take a 3-2 lead and smashed 104 to seal one of the best hits of his career.

Northern Irishman Mark Allen beat compatriot Jordan Brown 6-4 and drew in the second round against Kieran Wilson, who beat Matthew Celt 6-3.

World number nine Allen, the Northern Irish Open champion, fell 2-0 down but recovered to win five of the next six frames with breaks of 68, 105, 113, 63 and 55.

Wilson, ranked seventh in the world, opened up a 2-0 lead after opening breaks of 103 and 101 before sealing victory with a 74 in the ninth frame.
