A new caravan of migrants, mainly from Venezuela, is crossing Mexico with the intention of entering the United States. They are protesting against a new immigration policy introduced by Washington that tries to limit the flow of people crossing the Mexican border.
They are about a thousand people, including children, who fled the city of Tapachula in the state of Chiapas, on Guatemala’s border with Mexico. Mostly Venezuelans, these migrants began their march north to enter the United States, 2,800 km away.
Mexican immigration agencies have already warned that Venezuelans crossing the country in this caravan will not be able to enter the United States. Especially given the new rules announced by Washington.
An agreement between the United States and the Mexican government determined that only 24,000 Venezuelans would be allowed to enter the United States. However, one of the criteria imposed is that applicants for immigration must know a person living in the United States and be willing to pay his/her expenses if necessary. Also, all caravan members can only enter the country by air.
“It’s unfair because many of us are tired, tired, trying to get by, so they give us this message,” Venezuelan Sandy Araujo told AFP. For the young man, Washington’s move should have informed immigrants in advance. Like him. , who faced a difficult journey for several weeks. “But we are making progress”, he said.
Those who started the trek earlier and have already reached the US border are also protesting. For days, dozens of people have protested on one of the bridges connecting the Mexican state of Tamaulipas to the US state of Texas, blocking access to the road, local officials said.
Since October 2021, US officials have calculated that more than 155,000 Venezuelans have entered its southern border, three times the number in the previous period.
