The presidency of the European Union proposes to hold an “urgent” meeting on energy

ROME, August 26 (ANSA) – The Czech Republic, which holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, announced Friday (26) that it has proposed an emergency meeting with the bloc’s ministers to discuss the energy crisis. There are fears of power outages in some countries due to lack of supplies from Russia.

Czech Prime Minister Petr Viala confirmed via social networks that “the presidency will hold an urgent meeting of energy ministers to discuss specific emergency measures to address the energy situation.”

Among the issues that will be discussed is the proposal to impose a ceiling on the prices of energy sources, especially gas, and the adoption of more measures to prevent more serious problems with the approach of winter. The imposition of the ceiling divides the bloc countries.

In addition, continued cuts to natural gas supplies from Russia – due to sanctions imposed by the invasion of Ukraine – raise the level of tension.

On Friday, another international story – this time from the BBC – confirmed what Finnish media had been saying for over a month, that Gazprom was burning natural gas at the Portovaya compressor station at levels never seen before.

Losses are estimated at around 10 million euros per day. (Ansa).
