This weekend’s café party features Roxette’s best songs

Weekend Concerto Café features the best songs from Swedish rock duo Roxette. The program is broadcast on Radio Atlântico Sul FM 105.7, on Saturday (20), at 9 am, with re-broadcast on Sunday (21), at 10 am. Formed by Marie Fredrickson and Per Geisel, the duo was a worldwide success between the late 1980s and 1990s and has sold more than 80 million albums worldwide.

Concerto Café presents Roxette songs

The name Roxette was chosen from the 1974 song of the same name by British band ‘Dr. Feelgood’, a favorite of singer Per Gessle. Marie Fredriksson and Per Geisel, who were already successful artists in Sweden, decided to form the duo in 1986. The duo’s debut single, “Neverending Love”, was a huge hit in the country, as was their debut album, “Pearls of Passion”.

During the 1980s and 1990s, duo Roxette had nineteen number-one singles in the UK and four number one singles in the US. They were: “look”, “listen to your heart”, “it must have been love” and “fun”. In addition, the duo earned two platinum albums for their album “Look Sharp!” for 1988; and “Joyride” from 1991. “The Look” and “It must have been Love” won two gold songs.

Roxette is the second most commercially successful Swedish band after ABBA.

Mary Fredrickson’s health

In 2002, Mary was diagnosed with acute brain cancer and underwent extensive treatment. In 2009, the singer gradually returned to the stage, after her musical commitments and fan meetings. In 2016, Roxette released their tenth studio album, “Good Karma,” and announced that they would be on tour to commemorate their 30th anniversary on the road. However, the group’s projects were put on hold when singer Mary had to stop performing after doctors advised her to avoid touring, due to her health. The album was a commercial success upon its release. It debuted at number one in the Czech Republic, number two in Switzerland and Sweden, and topped the top ten in Austria, Hungary, Brazil, Russia and Spain.

In late 2019, singer Mary Fredrickson passed away after a 17-year battle with acute brain cancer.

Compilation

In 2020, the project “Bag of Trix: Music From The Roxette Vaults” was launched. The set contains four discs, with 47 songs not released or deleted by the band, as well as demos, alternate mixes, Spanish versions, and additional tracks.

One of the highlights is a version of the Beatles classic “Help”, recorded in 1995, at Abbey Road Studios, in London, with a stunning audio interpretation of Mary.
