US sends two surface-to-air missile systems to Ukraine

As part of its latest weapons package for Ukraine, the US is sending two Nassams missile systems, four additional anti-aircraft radars and 150,000 rounds of 155mm artillery shells to Ukraine, the Pentagon said this Friday.

The aid package, worth about $820 million, was widely announced by US President Joe Biden after a meeting of NATO leaders in Madrid on Thursday focused on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Ukrainians are facing brutal brutality again this week for an attack on a crowded shopping mall. They continue to fight for their country, and the United States continues to support them and their just cause,” the secretary of state said. Anthony Blinken in a report on aid.

A Kh-22 missile fired by a Russian bomber hit a shopping mall in the central city of Kremenchuk on Monday, killing at least 19 people, Ukrainian officials said. The attack drew condemnation from Western leaders and the Pope, but Russia rejected Ukraine’s statement that the missile struck a Western-supplied weapons depot near the shopping complex and caught fire.

The Pentagon provided more details on Friday in formalizing the announcement and added that the latest round of defense assistance included additional munitions for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).
