The Apple Watch helped save a woman from drowning in the United States. The case took place on June 15 in the Columbia River, which is named after its largest body of water, local media reported. The incident, which was posted on Facebook by the Tales City Police Department, located in the state of Oregon – caused an uproar in the international media. The post states that the swimmer made an emergency call with his smartwatch after being submerged in water with an average temperature of 13º C for 30 minutes.
The police report states that the woman was found by the rescue team in a state of hypothermia and extreme fatigue. After repeated attempts to free her foot from the rock formations of the river, the swimmer invented an alternative, asking for help through the wearable Apple, which has an emergency SOS feature.

How to activate the Apple Watch emergency feature
With the SOS emergency function, the Apple Watch automatically calls local emergency services and shares the user’s location with them. The user’s emergency contact will also be notified via text message when the feature is triggered. The emergency call function is available from the third generation of the watch released in 2017.
To ask for help with the Apple Smartwatch, press and hold the Apple Watch sidebar button and select “Emergency SOS” from the menu that opens. The wearer must be connected to an iPhone or an Internet network.

At other times the Apple Watch saved lives
This is not the first time an Apple smartwatch has helped save people’s lives. In 2019, American James Brutciano fell off a cliff in the United States and in New Jersey. The man sustained minor injuries, suffered a fracture to his back in three areas, and was rescued from his Apple Watch after receiving a warning from rescue workers, who recorded the crash with its sensors and contacted emergency services.
Apple Watch also played a key role in rescuing someone who fell into a frozen lake in the United States. William Rogers, then 62, was sliding on the lake when the ice broke and he fell straight into the frozen water. After a call through his Apple Watch, the man was rescued by firefighters from the scene.
Among the many stories of people being rescued by the Apple Watch in emergencies, there is one case that has resonated in Brazil. In 2020, advertiser George Fryer discovered he had heart problems after his clock recorded 140 beats per minute (ppm) for more than ten minutes. Upon notification of the device, the person sought medical help and was diagnosed with tachycardia, which was treated before the condition worsened.
