Two years after the outbreak of the epidemic, Rock in Rio is again held in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Today (6), event organization Palco Mundo, the main and largest structure for the festival’s performances, presented. What is new is that the stage will be made of steel, with a structure reused and 100% recyclable.

“Every time we show that a big dream is possible and come true. This stage is another example of that. We understand that our story will inspire others. This is the story we want to tell,” said Luis Justo, CEO of Rock In Rio.

He highlighted that ensuring sustainability and involving all partners in this policy is one of the goals set by the festival. This year’s stage will be held in partnership with Gerdau, the largest steel producer in Brazil. According to Gerdau CEO Gustavo Werneck, sustainability is also a concern for the company. “We have to implement the measures as quickly as possible, so that we can continue to use the resources that are on this planet and leave them to the generations that come after us,” he says.

Werneck and Justo, this morning, participated in an interview to explain the details of the partnership at the festival.

In response to a question about the possibility of political demonstrations in the event, such as what happened at the Lollapalooza Festival, in São Paulo, in March of this year, Justo confirmed that the organization does not have a partisan position. According to the CEO, Rock In Rio “has never had and will never have any kind of political office.” But this, according to him, “does not prevent people from having positions, [sejam] artists or audience. It is rooted in democracy and has always been present in the history of the festival.”

On the Mondo Theater, approximately 200 tons of steel will be used, equivalent to the manufacture of 200 cars. The theater will be 30 meters high, similar to a ten-storey building, and 104 meters wide, the equivalent of two Olympic swimming pools.

The material will be 100% recyclable, meaning that Mundo’s stage scenography will be reused forever when it ceases to be a stage, able to be transformed into homes, buildings, cars and hospitals, among other things.

In all, more than 1 million people, including waste pickers and cooperatives, participate in the recycling process in Gerdau. Most of Girdau’s steel, 73%, is produced from recycling scrap metal.
