Thiago Monteiro kept Brazil alive in the conflict with Germany in Davis Cup. At the end of the first day of a qualifying duel for the final stage of the Men’s Tennis Internations Traditional Championship, the result of a best-of-five match is 1 to 1.
Citizen Ciara (216th in the world) beat Jan-Lennard Struve (60th) in two sets to 1, part 6/3, 1/6, 6/3. Backed by a raucous crowd at Barra Olympic Park, in Rio de Janeiro, he triumphed in the decisive moments.
In the first match of the day, Olympic champion Alexander Zverev, ranked three in the world, confirmed his favourite. He beat Thiago Wild of Paraná in straight sets, Partial 6/4 and 6/2.
The match will end on Saturday with up to three matches. The first will be my doubles, and maybe these are: Bruno Soares (19th in the doubles classification) and Felipe Melligini (42nd) against Tim Poetz (12th) and Kevin Krawetz (14th). Captains can still make substitutions.
Next, he will face Montero Zverev. If necessary, there will be a decisive clash between Wild and Struff. The program will begin at 2 p.m., with it broadcast on SporTV 3.
Monteiro’s significant victory was his eighth in 16 games and nine Davis Cup matches, a competition in which he made his debut in 2016. He was coming out of defeats against Australia in the 2020 qualifiers away from home.
“It was crazy, indescribable emotion. I experienced something similar at the Rio Open, but today it was amazing. Running around the country is unique, everyone shouting my name. Representing the country is different. I’m happy to win the victory,” said Thiago.
