Ukraine has been the epicenter of tensions between Russia and the West for several months

Tensions over Ukraine have risen in recent months due to accusations from Western countries that Moscow is preparing for an invasion.

Ukraine and Russia have been on opposite sides of a conflict since the Russian government annexed Crimea in 2014.

Tensions have risen over the conflict in eastern Ukraine that has killed more than 13,000 people so far and where Russia is accused of backing the separatists. The Kremlin denies this.

– Movement of forces –

On November 10, the United States asked Russia for clarification after discovering “unusual” troop movements on the border with Ukraine.

By April, Moscow had already massed about 100,000 troops on the border, raising early fears of an invasion.

NATO, the European Union, France and Germany warn the Russian government against any further “aggressive” action.

Russian President Vladimir Putin accuses the West of stoking tensions by handing Ukraine modern weapons and conducting “provocative military exercises” in the Black Sea and near its borders.

– Fear of attack –

On November 28, Ukraine claimed that Russia had about 92,000 troops on its border, ready to attack in late January or early February. Moscow denies the accusations.

On December 1, Russian authorities accused Ukraine of deploying troops in the east of the country.

– Biden Putin’s virtual dome –

On December 7, US President Joe Biden threatened Vladimir Putin with “serious economic sanctions” if he invades Ukraine, at a hypothetical bilateral summit.

The Russian president demands “legal guarantees” that Ukraine will not join NATO, and reiterates Russia’s right to “protect its security.”

On the seventeenth of this month, Moscow submitted two draft treaties to ban any expansion of NATO and the establishment of US military bases in countries that were located in the orbit of the former Soviet Union.

Then Washington indicates that it is ready to start a “diplomatic dialogue” with Putin, but classifies some of the demands as “unacceptable.”

On December 28, Moscow and Washington agreed to hold negotiations on security in Europe.

– Diplomatic week –

On January 10, 2022, the Russians and the Americans began tense negotiations in Geneva, the first phase of an intense week of diplomacy.

On the 12th day, NATO and Russia announced their “deep differences” over security in Europe, at the end of a bilateral council meeting in Brussels.

– Large-scale cyberattack in Ukraine –

On January 14, several Ukrainian government portals were subjected to a large-scale cyberattack, without significant damage according to the authorities, who claim to have “evidence” of Russian involvement.

On the same day, Washington accuses Moscow of sending “subversive” operations to Ukraine with the aim of creating a “pretext” for an invasion, which the Kremlin calls “unjustified” statements.

– Russian forces in Belarus –

On the 18th, Moscow demands answers from the West before further negotiations.

Russia began sending an unspecified number of troops to Belarus to conduct “improvised” combat exercises on the borders of the European Union and Ukraine.

Washington, concerned about the possible deployment of Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus, warns that Moscow could attack Ukraine “at any moment”.

– Blinkin in Ukraine –

On Wednesday, the head of US diplomacy, Anthony Blinken, arrived in Kiev to show his support for Ukraine, as Washington announced another $200 million in security assistance to Ukraine.

The Ukrainian government said it did not plan any attack against the pro-Russian separatists.

Blinken is scheduled to travel to Berlin on Thursday for talks with Germany, France and the United Kingdom.

The foreign minister, who warned Wednesday that Washington would not respond in writing to the Russian demands while negotiations continued, is scheduled to meet his colleague Sergei Lavrov in Geneva on Friday.

French President Emmanuel Macron has said that Europe and NATO should build a “new security order” against Russia.
