Stephen Sondheim, author of West Side Story, dies at 91

Stephen Sondheim died Friday (26), at the age of 91, one of the greatest composers of musicals in Broadway history. The news was confirmed by his lawyer and friend F. Richard Pappas for The New York Times. According to the publication, Sondheim died suddenly, at his home in Connecticut, United States.

Among Sondheim’s most famous musical works West side story, a show that became a movie in 1961 and was nominated for eleven Academy Awards. It won ten, including Best Picture. The work, created in New York in the 1960s, shows the impossible love between young Maria and Tony.

The film, by the way, will win in December of this year a remake, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Ansel Elgort and Rachel Ziegler.

In his career, shows also stand out Sweeney Todd (1979), gypsy (1959) e Into the forest (1987), among other great Broadway musicals.

Stephen Sondheim has also appeared on several Hollywood soundtracks and won an Oscar for the original song in 1991. Sooner or later (I always get my leg up), sung by Madonna in the movie Dick Tracy.
