U.S. official says to maintain US presence in Nicaragua after elections and support anti-Sandinist groups

Sputnik – The United States is reportedly planning to support anti-Sandinista groups in Nicaragua after Sunday’s presidential election (7), and has already determined that his term will not be considered democratic if Daniel Ortega wins.

A senior US State Department official told reporters on Friday that the United States would maintain its presence in Nicaragua after the presidential election and would support those seeking to restore democracy.

The United States, which considers Nicaragua a dictatorship if Ortega wins, will not consider his term democratic, Reuters reports.

The United States will use its influence in international financial institutions against Nicaragua and avoid certain business “contacts” that could benefit the Nicaraguan government, the official added.

He said it was “obvious” that the Nicaraguan government was using it to pressure political prisoners, which the United States would not accept.

The comments come after the US House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a renaissance law that would impose sanctions on Nicaragua and impose access to international financial resources.

The bill, which has not yet been signed by President Joe Biden, calls on Nicaragua to reconsider its compliance with the CAFTA Free Trade Agreement, which would allow Nicaragua to export goods to the United States at lower prices.

Washington has vehemently opposed the Sandinista National Liberation Front, led by Ortega, since he came to power in 1979 and overthrew the US – backed Somosa family dictatorship.
