SAN FRANCISCO – Facebook is no longer using its facial recognition system that allows recognition, since 2010, of a person in photos or videos posted to the social network, its headquarters announced Tuesday (2).

The announcement comes at a time when Facebook is in a major crisis after the US press leaked a large amount of internal documents.

“There are many concerns about the place that facial recognition technology occupies in society and regulators are still in the process of introducing a clear set of rules governing its use,” Meta said in a statement.

“Amid this ongoing uncertainty, we believe it is appropriate to limit the use of facial recognition to a small group of cases,” he added.

It is not clear when the changes will take effect, but they will be widely felt because, according to the platform, more than a third of users have chosen to use the facial recognition system.

According to the statement, the amendment “will lead to the removal of more than one billion facial recognition profiles.”

Facebook has just changed the name of its parent company to “Meta” in an effort to draw attention to its vision of virtual reality for the future, in an attempt to shift the focus on the various scandals it is involved in.

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, which are used by billions of people around the world, will keep their names.
