The passage of the herd through Madrid is a traditional festival of cattle in the Iberian country that dates back to the ancient ways of the shepherds.

Last year, the celebration was canceled due to Covid-19 protocols. At that time, Spain was beginning to recover after being identified as the epicenter of the epidemic in Europe.

Breeders migrate from the north of the country to the south with their flocks to escape the approaching winter in the northern hemisphere and the freezing of pastures.

Miguel Gonzalez, a 52-year-old breeder who has worked most of his life with animals, told Reuters he was proud to support traditional migration.

“We’re taking back the royal roads,” Gonzalez said. “From Castilla Leon to Extremadura and Andalusia. That’s why we visit Madrid every year for the Migration Festival.”

For centuries, the Shepherds’ Road has run through the inner cities, but since 1994 it has been present in busy and modern Madrid.
