WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States has expressed concern over China’s actions against the Chinese NBA following criticism on the internet of treatment with Tibet by the Chinese following the disappearance of highlights of the Boston Celtics match from the Chinese streaming platform.
The Boston Celtics this week tweeted a video showing Einstein Condor supporting Tibet and wearing a T-shirt with the image of the exiled spiritual leader the Dalai Lama. He called Chinese President Xi Jinping a “terrible dictator.”
Cantor was assassinated on Chinese social media, and only the written schedule of his team’s game was available on Chinese sports site Tencent. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenpin said the player was “trying to attract attention” and that his comments were “unworthy of denial”.
A US State Department spokesman said in an email that the United States was concerned about the actions of the PRC (People’s Republic of China) against the National Basketball Association (NBA) over comments made by a player about Tibet.
“We respect freedom of expression and we support anyone who exercises this right,” the spokesman said.
Since 1951, China has brought Tibet under its control by calling its People’s Liberation Army “peaceful liberation”.
