5.9 magnitude earthquake hits Japan coast

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Japan on Tuesday, 24.

The tsunami hit Yaini, on Hachijo Island, at 8:58 a.m. (local time; 8:58 p.m. Monday in Brasilia), JMA reported.

The quake struck in the ocean near Torishima Island, and its epicenter was only 10 kilometers deep, the center said. Japan Meteorological Agency.

A tsunami warning has been issued for the area. Waves of up to 1 meter are forecast to affect the Izu Islands, a group of volcanic islands south of the Izu Peninsula, Honshu, and the Ogasawara Islands, an archipelago of about 30 islands.

There are no reports of injuries or material damage in the area yet.

Earlier this year, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of Japan, putting the country on 24-hour tsunami alert.

The earthquake killed more than 200 people and caused damage to several cities.
