Mobilization after failure in the World Cup
The disappointing fourth place in the 2023 World Cup prompted big names to return to the American team in the Olympics, in search of the fifth gold in a row and the seventeenth in history. LeBron and Curry were among those who readily offered to be in Paris. The star mix also attracted Embiid, who was born in Cameroon and holds French citizenship, but chose to represent the United States.
Of all those confirmed in Paris, Kevin Durant has the most Olympic experience. The Phoenix Suns forward emerges as the United States' leading scorer at the Olympics and, along with the retired Carmelo Anthony, is the only three-time champion. For example, LeBron has two gold medals, while Curry has never played in an edition of the Games.
Since NBA athletes began competing in the Olympics in 1992, the year of the famous “Dream Team,” the United States has only lost the gold medal once. In Athens in 2004, Argentina became the champion, and the Americans won the bronze medal.
