Unions deplore the scarcity of resources and health personnel as a result of austerity measures imposed during the financial crisis
247 – More than 2,200,000 people took to the streets of Madrid, Spain, on Sunday (13) in defense of more investment in health, in protest of the health chaos caused by cutbacks in the region.
With the slogan “Madrid demonstrates in support of public health and against plans to destroy primary care services”, the demonstrators left four different parts of the city towards the Town Hall, in the Plaza Cibeles.
Artists, entire families with children and grandparents, politicians, trade unionists and health professionals participated in this work.
Unions say primary health care services have been under enormous pressure for years due to lack of resources and staff, as a result of austerity measures imposed during the country’s financial crisis.
“What they are doing is an unprecedented disaster,” said Monica Garcia, a member of the Mas Madrid party.
“A very simple way to retain professionals is to treat them well: give them contracts that aren’t just for a month, a week or a weekend. When the government can’t do that, it’s because there are political interests.
